Description-
  • Tiger Ann Parker is smart in school and good at baseball, but she's forever teased about her family by the girls in class. Tiger Ann knows her folks are different from others in their small town of Saitter, Louisiana. They are mentally slow, and Tiger Ann keeps her pain and embarrassment hidden as long as her strong and smart Granny runs the household. Then Granny dies suddenly and Aunt Dorie Kay arrives, offering Tiger Ann a way out. Now Tiger Ann must make the most important decision of her life.

Reviews-
  • AudioFile Magazine The summer Tiger Ann finishes sixth grade in Saiter, Louisiana, is a season of awakening emotions. Tiger has always known that her parents are retarded, or "slow" as she likes to call them, but it has never mattered the way it does this summer. Suddenly adolescent discomfort makes her suspect that she has outdistanced her parents developmentally. Judith Ivey's thick Southern drawl imbues Tiger's first-person narration with such authenticity that the listener can feel the steamy Louisiana summer. Mama's voice, chirpy or childishly whining, is innocent or manipulative by turns. Aunt Dorie Kay's sophisticated voice is as smooth as her Baton Rouge lifestyle. And Daddy's slow and careful speech patterns emphasize his limits, as well as his emotional strength. Ivey brings great sensitivity to this powerful text. T.B. Winner of AUDIOFILE Earphones Award. • Publisher Weekly, Starred "Making an unusually auspicious debut, Holt offers a unique coming-of-age tale . . . readers . . . will admire [Tiger's] courage, loyalty and love for her parents."
  • The Horn Book Magazine, Starred "Holt . . . eases the action along with a low-key, unpretentious plot . . . uncannily credible characters."
  • The Bulletin, Recommended "Tiger has a distinctive voice, and her subtle observations include an increasing awareness of those marginalized by difference of class, race, and intelligence."
